I’m Earl Henslin, the child counselor with the Christian counseling group Henslin and Associates in Brea, California
Firstly, I think there are two points of view about marijuana. One is that of all the illicit drugs, and of all the intoxicants including alcohol, marijuana is probably the least dangerous on a number of dimensions.
The other viewpoint is that marijuana is the illicit drug most likely to be used by juveniles, and that it is a much more dangerous drug than many people believe. It also can be the gateway drugs. Meaning it will be the entrance to some other drugs like cocaine.
I would like to say that this issue is not good for these reasons.
1.Long-term marijuana use leads to structural changes in the brain. One study showed marijuana users was inversely correlated with cumulative exposure to the drug in the left, but not in the right, hemisphere of the brain.
2.The adverse effects of smoked marijuana on the respiratory system are outweighing the potential benefits. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke.
3.some potentially serious side effects were noted, including an increased heart rate and a decrease in blood pressure in studies using smoked marijuana

When you (i.e., Dr. Henslin) say that "of all the intoxicants including alcohol, marijuana is probably the least dangerous on a number of dimensions" aren't you admitting that marijuana may be better than alcohol and tabacco, which are both legal? It seems to contradict other things that are written here about marijuana. It's best to make your character as consistent as possible.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that you made good efforts to paraphrase what you read on various Web pages, but be careful to get it right. The paraphrase in section one (about structural damage to the brain) doesn't make sense. It was one particular part of the brain--the hippocampus on the left side--that got smaller the more marijuana that was smoked.
I'm glad to see that you put the works cited in APA style at the bottom of the post.
