Current understanding of marijuana
Our current understanding of marijuana are that it is no more harm than tobacco, and it gives rise to the medical relieves.
Firstly, it is also no more addictive than alcohol and tobaccos, although it is considered to be a gateway towards other drugs such as cocaine.
Secondly, in fact, in America 13 states allow marijuana for the medical use. Shown in the picture below.
These are the facts that we know.

It's interesting that the States which are most accepting of medical marijuana are in the West and Northeast. I wonder if there's anything about the demographics of those States that make them more liberal when it comes to medical marijuana. Also, your observation that marijuana is often considered to be a "gateway drug" can be checked out through your research. I think you'll find it to be a controversial question. It might be interesting to see if there are any restrictions placed on people from States where medical marijuana is illegal to go to States where it is legal to use it.
